Zinc Oxide

A mineral UV filter that provides broad-spectrum ultraviolet protection and is also used for skin-protective properties.

Sunscreen Evidence: Established

Ingredient overview

What is Zinc Oxide?

Zinc oxide is an inorganic ultraviolet filter used in mineral sunscreens. Properly formulated zinc oxide can contribute broad-spectrum protection across UVB and UVA wavelengths, with performance influenced by particle size, coating, dispersion and the complete sunscreen system.

Modern micronized and nanoscale zinc oxide can reduce the visible white cast associated with older mineral sunscreens, but sunscreen efficacy cannot be predicted from the ingredient alone. The labeled SPF and UVA protection of the finished tested product matter far more than simply seeing zinc oxide on the INCI list.
