Spicules / Reedle

Microscopic spicule technologies create a prickling sensory effect and are used in some Korean treatments to support intensive renewal routines.

Texture & Delivery Evidence: Emerging

Ingredient overview

What is Spicules / Reedle?

Cosmetic spicules are microscopic needle-like structures, often derived from marine or freshwater sponges and listed as hydrolyzed sponge. They are used to create temporary microchannels or a prickling mechanical stimulus at the skin surface, which can alter delivery of other ingredients.

Experimental work demonstrates that natural sponge spicules can enhance dermal delivery, and recent clinical work with microneedle creams suggests measurable skin effects. However, this technology is not equivalent to conventional serum delivery, and evidence is still developing for consumer cosmetic 'reedle' products, concentrations and repeated-use schedules.

Routine guidance

How to use it

Follow the product's stated frequency and application method closely. Start with lower-intensity spicule products and avoid applying over broken, inflamed or freshly treated skin.

Pairing guidance

Routine compatibility

Because spicule products can temporarily increase skin sensitivity and delivery, use caution with strong retinoids, exfoliating acids or other irritating treatments in the same session unless the brand specifically instructs otherwise.

Formula context matters

Good to know

Prickling is part of the intended sensory effect in many spicule products, but significant burning, persistent redness or barrier damage is not. Delivery enhancement can also increase exposure to other ingredients in the formula.
