Ingredient overview

What is Kaolin?

Kaolin is a naturally occurring clay mineral used in cosmetic masks, cleansers and powders for its absorbent and adsorbent properties. It can help take up excess surface oil and also serves functional formulation roles such as bulking and texture control.

Kaolin should be understood as an oil-management and cleansing-support ingredient rather than an acne medication. Its effect depends on particle properties, purity, how long a mask is left on and the other ingredients used to prevent excessive dryness.

Routine guidance

How to use it

Use kaolin masks or cleansers as directed rather than allowing them to over-dry on skin. Frequency should reflect your oiliness and barrier tolerance.

Pairing guidance

Routine compatibility

Kaolin pairs well with hydrating ingredients and can be used alongside acne routines when cleansing is not overly aggressive.

Good to know

Frequent clay masking can leave skin tight or dry. Clay purity and particle characteristics matter, so use properly formulated cosmetic products rather than raw clay powders.
