Azelaic Acid

A multifunctional active used for blemish support, uneven-looking tone and redness-prone skin.

Acne & Brightening Evidence: Established

Ingredient overview

What is Azelaic Acid?

Azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic acid with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and pigmentation-related activity. Dermatologic formulations are used for acne and rosacea, while cosmetic products may use lower strengths or derivatives for blemish and uneven-tone support.

Clinical evidence is stronger for appropriately concentrated azelaic-acid formulations than for many trend-driven brightening ingredients. However, concentration, vehicle and skin tolerance matter, and a cosmetic product mentioning azelaic acid is not necessarily equivalent to a prescription-strength treatment.

It can be paired with niacinamide, moisturizers and sunscreen. Combining multiple potentially irritating acne or exfoliating treatments should be guided by skin tolerance.
