Ingredient overview

What is Fatty Acids?

Free fatty acids are a normal part of the lipid matrix in the stratum corneum, where they work with ceramides and cholesterol to support barrier organization and reduce water loss. Skincare formulas may contain fatty acids directly or include plant oils rich in specific fatty acids.

Linoleic acid is often highlighted in barrier-focused formulas, but fatty acids such as oleic, stearic and palmitic acid can also appear for emollience, texture or structural roles. Their effect depends on the type of fatty acid and the finished formulation.

How to use it

Fatty-acid-rich creams and oils are generally used toward the end of a routine to soften skin and help reduce moisture loss.

Routine compatibility

Fatty acids complement ceramides, cholesterol, squalane and other barrier-support ingredients and can sit alongside most treatment actives.

Formula context matters

Good to know

Different fatty acids behave differently in formulas, so a generic 'fatty acid' label does not predict whether a product will feel light, rich or suitable for acne-prone skin.
