Succinic Acid

A newer blemish-focused ingredient used in formulas aimed at excess oil and breakout-prone skin.

Acne & Oil Control Evidence: Emerging

Ingredient overview

What is Succinic Acid?

Succinic acid is a small dicarboxylic acid involved naturally in cellular metabolism and has recently appeared in blemish-focused cosmetics. Laboratory interest includes antimicrobial and oil-related applications, but topical acne evidence is still emerging.

A recent open clinical study reported improvements with a truncal-acne lotion containing succinic acid together with niacinamide and a biotechnological phytocomplex. Because multiple active components were used, the study cannot tell us how much of the result came from succinic acid itself.

How to use it

Use succinic-acid blemish products according to their directions and introduce gradually if the formula also includes other active acne ingredients.

Pairing guidance

Routine compatibility

Succinic acid is often positioned alongside niacinamide, zinc PCA, salicylic acid and soothing ingredients, but evidence for ideal combinations remains limited.

Good to know

Topical acne evidence for succinic acid alone is sparse. Multi-ingredient studies should not be interpreted as proof that succinic acid produced the full clinical effect.
