What is Lactic Acid?

Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid used for exfoliation and is also related to lactate, a component of the skin's natural moisturizing factor. This gives lactic-acid formulas a useful combination of exfoliating and humectant-related properties.

Compared with glycolic acid, lactic acid has a larger molecular size and is often selected for gentler-feeling exfoliation, although actual irritation depends on concentration and pH. It is commonly used for rough texture, dullness and body-care concerns.
