Ingredient overview

What is Retinol?

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative in the retinoid family. After topical application it must be converted in skin through retinaldehyde to retinoic acid, the biologically active form that influences cell turnover, collagen-related pathways and comedone formation.

Retinol has strong relevance for photoaging, fine lines, texture and blemish-prone skin, but cosmetic products vary enormously in actual retinol concentration, stability and delivery. Encapsulation and packaging can matter as much as the percentage printed on the front of the box.

Routine guidance

How to use it

Introduce retinol gradually, usually in evening routines, starting a few nights per week. Use a moisturizer as needed and wear sunscreen consistently during the day.

Pairing guidance

Routine compatibility

Retinol can be paired with niacinamide, peptides, ceramides and hydrating ingredients. Strong acids or other retinoids in the same routine can increase irritation.

Good to know

Dryness, peeling and irritation are common during introduction. Retinoid use in pregnancy is generally avoided; seek clinician guidance if pregnant, breastfeeding or using prescription retinoids.
