Ingredient overview

What is Salicylic Acid / BHA?

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid used in acne and pore-care products because it is lipophilic and can work within oily follicular environments as well as at the skin surface. It is keratolytic, helping loosen compacted dead skin cells and support clearer-looking pores.

Salicylic acid has a much stronger evidence base for acne-related use than many botanical blemish ingredients, but concentration and vehicle determine how a cleanser differs from a leave-on treatment or peel. More is not automatically better when the routine already contains retinoids or other exfoliants.

How to use it

Use salicylic acid according to product type. Cleansers may be used more frequently than stronger leave-on exfoliants. Start slowly if your routine already includes retinoids or acids.

Pairing guidance

Routine compatibility

Salicylic acid pairs well with niacinamide, zinc PCA and soothing or barrier-support ingredients. Strong combinations with retinoids or other acids should be guided by tolerance.

Good to know

Overuse can cause dryness, irritation and barrier disruption. Strong peels require more caution than ordinary cosmetic leave-on products.
