Ingredient overview

What is Ferulic Acid?

Ferulic acid is a plant-derived phenolic antioxidant used in topical skincare to help neutralize reactive oxygen species. It is particularly well known in antioxidant serums because it can be combined with vitamins C and E and can contribute to formula stability as well as antioxidant activity.

Human studies of ferulic-acid-containing formulations report improvements across erythema, pigmentation and photoaging-related measures, although many formulas contain several antioxidants at once. This makes ferulic acid useful but also means the contribution of one ingredient cannot always be isolated.

Good to know

Many clinical studies use multi-antioxidant formulas, so benefits cannot always be attributed to ferulic acid alone. Sensitive skin may react to low-pH antioxidant serums.
