Ingredient overview

What is AHA?

Alpha hydroxy acids, or AHAs, are water-soluble acids used to loosen cohesion between surface corneocytes and increase exfoliation. Common cosmetic AHAs include glycolic, lactic and mandelic acid, but each differs in molecular size, penetration and supporting properties.

AHAs can improve the appearance of rough texture, dullness and uneven tone when appropriately formulated. Benefits and irritation depend heavily on acid type, free-acid concentration, pH, frequency and the rest of the routine, so a simple 'contains AHA' label says relatively little about strength.

How to use it

AHA frequency depends on strength and format. Start less often with leave-on exfoliants and increase only if skin remains comfortable. Use sunscreen consistently.

Pairing guidance

Routine compatibility

AHAs can be used with hydrating and barrier-support ingredients. Combining strong AHA, retinoid and other exfoliating treatments in one routine can increase irritation.

Formula context matters

Good to know

AHAs can sting, dry or irritate skin and can increase sun sensitivity. Strong peels require more caution than low-strength daily formulas.
