Ingredient overview

What is Keratin?

Keratin is the fibrous structural protein that makes up much of the hair shaft and nails. Cosmetic products generally use hydrolyzed keratin, in which the large protein has been broken into smaller peptides that can deposit on the hair surface and, depending on molecular size, penetrate damaged areas to some extent.

Hair-care studies show hydrolyzed keratin can form protective films, improve some mechanical properties and reduce moisture loss. These effects are cosmetic conditioning and damage support; topical keratin does not permanently rebuild a living hair follicle or reverse the biological causes of hair loss.

Good to know

Hydrolyzed keratin supports the existing hair fiber but does not repair the living follicle or treat medical hair loss. Effects vary with peptide size, concentration and the rest of the formula.
