Ingredient overview

What is Arbutin?

Arbutin is a naturally occurring hydroquinone glycoside found in plants such as bearberry and is used in cosmetic formulas for pigmentation support. The term usually refers to beta-arbutin, while alpha-arbutin is a related synthetic stereoisomer with separate formulation characteristics.

Arbutin works through melanogenesis-related pathways including tyrosinase inhibition, but its efficacy and stability depend on formulation. It should be distinguished from hydroquinone itself, and users should not assume alpha-arbutin and arbutin are interchangeable at the same concentration.
