Ingredient overview

What is Ceramides?

Ceramides are a family of lipids naturally present in the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of skin. Together with cholesterol and free fatty acids, they help form the organized lipid matrix that limits water loss and protects the skin from external irritants.

In skincare, ceramides are mainly used in moisturizers and barrier-focused treatments. Different ceramide types may appear on ingredient lists, including Ceramide NP, AP and EOP. Their value depends on the whole formula, especially the balance of supporting lipids and emollients rather than the presence of one ceramide name alone.
