Urea

A natural moisturizing factor component that can hydrate and soften rough skin; higher levels can also have keratolytic effects.

Ingredient overview

What is Urea?

Urea is naturally present in the skin's natural moisturizing factor and helps the stratum corneum hold water. In topical products it can act as a humectant at lower concentrations and can become more keratolytic, helping soften thick or rough skin, as concentration increases.

This concentration-dependent behavior is why urea appears in both everyday moisturizers and more intensive body or foot-care products. The finished product instructions matter, because a gentle hydrating formula and a stronger keratolytic treatment are not interchangeable.

How to use it

Use according to the product directions. Lower-strength urea moisturizers can fit daily routines, while stronger roughness-focused products may need more cautious use.

Pairing guidance

Routine compatibility

Urea works well with ceramides, glycerin, panthenol and other moisturizers. When using stronger urea products, be cautious about combining them with multiple exfoliating acids on the same area.

Good to know

Higher concentrations can sting compromised or freshly shaved skin and may be too active for some sensitive areas.
