MSM

MSM is used in some skincare formulas for skin-conditioning and soothing support.

Also known as: Methylsulfonylmethane

Soothing & Conditioning Evidence: Emerging

Ingredient overview

What is MSM?

MSM, or methylsulfonylmethane, is an organosulfur compound used in some supplements and topical cosmetic formulations. Proposed skin uses include soothing and conditioning support, but topical evidence is limited.

A double-blind trial in rosacea evaluated a topical combination of MSM with silymarin and found improvements in several redness, hydration and symptom measures. Because MSM was not tested alone, the study supports interest in the combination rather than establishing MSM as an independently proven rosacea active.

How to use it

Use MSM-containing creams or serums according to the finished product directions. There is not enough evidence to define a universal optimal topical concentration.

Pairing guidance

Routine compatibility

MSM is generally used in supportive formulas alongside antioxidants, soothing botanicals and moisturizers.

Good to know

Topical evidence is sparse and the best-known controlled study combined MSM with silymarin, so benefits cannot be attributed to MSM alone.
