Vitamin C and its derivatives are used for antioxidant protection, brightening and support for uneven-looking tone.

Also known as: Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin C Derivatives

Brightening & Antioxidant Evidence: Established

Ingredient overview

What is Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is an antioxidant with established roles in collagen biology and pigmentation pathways. In skincare, the best-studied form is L-ascorbic acid, while Korean formulas also use derivatives such as ascorbyl glucoside, sodium ascorbyl phosphate and 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid for improved stability or different formulation needs.

Vitamin C derivatives are not automatically equivalent to pure ascorbic acid in penetration, conversion or clinical evidence. A useful vitamin C product depends on the specific form, concentration, pH, packaging and stability, so the ingredient family name is only the beginning of the evaluation.

Routine guidance

How to use it

Vitamin C can be used morning or evening. Antioxidant serums are often used in the morning before moisturizer and sunscreen, while sensitive users may prefer gradual introduction.

Pairing guidance

Routine compatibility

Vitamin C can be used with vitamin E, ferulic acid, niacinamide, tranexamic acid and sunscreen. Modern formulas do not require avoiding niacinamide solely because of outdated incompatibility myths.

Formula context matters

Good to know

Low-pH ascorbic acid can sting sensitive skin and oxidized products may lose effectiveness. Derivative formulas vary in evidence and conversion to active vitamin C.
